I am fascinated by what drives people.
Money? Power? Sex? Fear?
It's different for everyone, but I have considered what drives the highly successful people I know well.
Believe it or not, I think it's an internal feeling of inadequacy.
I am close to CEO's, wealthy entrepreneurs and Olympic athletes. Many are driven by a desire to compensate for something in their past.
Dwight Stones is a friend of mine. He is a four-time Olympic high jumper and a 10-time world record holder. Of course, he is a great athlete, but his real secret was his drive.
He and I have spent many conversations talking about what drove him to Olympic heights (several metaphors in that sentence). It stems from an unhappy home life as a boy. He's friendly with many other Olympians and has often seen this general theme.
You can't manufacture motivation. But you can embrace whatever drive you have. Don't worry about why. You don't need to explain the fire in your belly to anyone.
The results will speak for themselves.
For me staying focused on my goals is a lot like exerise. You need to keep doing it for it to have any permanent effect. I write my goals down every night before I go to sleep. By doing so I harness all of the infinite power and resources of my subconscious mind into reaching my goals.
